Indian Embassy in Nepal awards 200 Golden Jubilee Scholarships to Nepali Students


The Indian Embassy in Nepal on Wednesday announced 200 Golden Jubilee Scholarships for meritorious Nepali students from different colleges and universities for the academic year 2018-19, for continuing their undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The golden jubilee scholarship scheme was introduced by the government of India in 2002 marking the completion of 50 years of India-Nepal Economic Co-operation.

This year the Golden Jubilee scholarship covers 36 undergraduate programmes such as MBBS, BDS, B.E, B.Sc, B.Com, and BBA. According to the Indian Embassy in Nepal, the recipients of the scholarship include 45 percent girls and 8 percent, differently-abled students.

In the official ceremony held at Hotel Hyatt Regency, Katmandu, Mr. Khaga Raj Baral, Secretary Education of Nepal who was also the Chief Guest presented the scholarship certificates to the students. The Ambassador of India to Nepal, Mr. Manjeev Singh Puri congratulated the students and advised them to achieve personal and professional fulfillment, which will contribute towards Nepal’s socio-economic development and will further deepen and strengthen India-Nepal Relations.

Under the Golden Jubilee scholarship scheme, an MBBS/BDS student will receive NRs 4000/- per month for five years and a BE student will receive NRs 4000/- for four years respectively. Also, those students studying other undergraduate courses will receive NRs 3000/- per month for three years. According to the press release released by the Embassy of India so far more than 2350 Nepali students have been awarded the Golden Jubilee Scholarships from across 77 districts of Nepal.

During the inception of the scholarship in 2002, 50 meritorious students were awarded scholarships. While in the year 2007, the numbers of scholarships were increased to 100. Since the year 2012, the numbers of scholarships have been doubled to 200.

The Government of India provides a total of about 3000 scholarships in Medical, Science, Veterinary Sciences, Pharmacology, Dental science, Agriculture, Engineering, Arts, Commerce, Science, Computer Science, Nursing and many other disciplines to study in Universities and Colleges in Nepal and in India. These Scholarships are part of India’s efforts to support human resources development in Nepal for the overall socio-economic development of Nepal and Nepali people.
