5 Ways To Celebrate Valentine’s Day If You’re In A Long-Distance Relationship

Being in a long-distance relationship sucks–but, being in a long-distance marriage sucks even more. It doesn’t get better when Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and cloyingly sweet messages are all over storefronts and push notifications from your favourite apps constantly keep telling you to celebrate the day of love with your SO. If you’re a big believer and want to embrace Valentine’s Day in all its totality, here are some ways to bridge the distance and celebrate the occasion together. So, without further ado, we present to you tried-and-tested methods (by yours truly) on how to spend V-day if you’re in a long-distance relationship:

Skype and cook together

Sure, V-Day usually means a candlelit meal; but just because you’re states apart doesn’t mean you can’t have one. You can cook simultaneously on video call. Decide on a meal beforehand, so that both of you can keep the ingredients ready. Pop open a bottle of wine or make a mocktail while the both of you cook. Discuss how the biryani has the right aroma or if the pasta is al-dente. From asking questions to commenting–you two will be connected even if you’re miles apart. The finishing touch–sitting together and enjoying the meal.

Make a playlist

CDs are passe; but thanks to music apps, you can still make a playlist of songs that are meaningful to you and share it with each other. Avoid sappy and mushy songs as they’ll just make you feel blah and wallow in self pity. Instead, pick a good balance–that RnB number you guys slow danced to; the fun, peppy Bollywood number both of y’all enjoyed; the song you both discovered together…

Get something he loves delivered to him

Does he love Chinese food? Or enjoys a certain beer? Thanks to delivery apps like Zomato and Grofers, you can get his favourite food or alcohol delivered to him. Bonus: you guys can Skype and relish the same thing together.

Plan a trip

Nothing breaks the gloom of not being together than planning a trip for the both of you. From booking flight tickets and checking out activities to researching hotel rooms–the thrill of being together overrides the current. If either of you is going to the other’s city, then try to scout for activities you haven’t done before. Go to a museum or book tickets to a play that’s arriving in the city–the options are limitless.

Text through the day

We don’t mean 2918 texts–rather send him super-cute texts of his best attributes, physical as well as mental. Or, do what Mr Big did to win back Carrie in Sex And The Citymovie–send love letters of great men/women, and add your own. Nothing seems better than receiving a cute email or Whatsapp celebrating your love.
